SmartSeam – Movement Detection

Monitoring of body movements is of great interest for professional but more and more also leisure athletes.

Therefore, sewing technology was used to simultaneously join the sports garment and integrate strain sensitive seams for movement detection. Electrical conductive yarns were sewn in, leveraging the many crossing points in a seam to create sensors. Upon loading of the seams, resistance of the electrical conductive yarns drops, which can be correlated back to the movement of the athlete. Sensitive seams were placed on areas, where large movements occur and can be measured, such are e.g. bending of the knee or elbow during squatting or push-ups.

Material:

Electrically conductive silver coated yarn HC40

Technology:

Cover-seam chain stitch 602 to create strain sensitive seams

Special Quality:

This strain sensitive movement monitoring demonstrator was developed in the SmartSeam project.
